shalom shanghai

A place for those who know. A place for people to come and have a drink after a working day. A secret bar. There's no signage to protect the secret. You have to pass through another restaurant's entrance and walk down the black stairs to get to the the twilight cellar with two small halls, a rough brick ceiling and lit candles.

Shalom shanghai is primarily a gin bar: gin on the Sichuan pepper and a tamarind, gin with lavender, mango, Asai berries, red oranges and the Thai blue tea.

We were asked to create a logo and brand identity system featuring the atmosphere of an old chinese brothel and opium den. A mark, which can be simply re-drawn by hands on a wall or on a poster, looking almost like a sacred symbol, reflects the name of the bar and works together with the visual identity, which is based on old chinese photos, re-photographed from the display screen to create a teasing feel of a counterfeit.
